The bags are used to filter the crushed root of the plant (Kava Kava) during the preparation of the drink.
Purpose: The bags help to separate solid particles (sediment) from the liquid to produce a clear, sediment-free drink. They act as a sieve that lets the liquid through and retains the coarse particles.
Traditionally, fabrics such as muslin or cotton can be used. Modern versions are often made of fine nylon mesh with a pore size of 75-100 microns, which provides good filtration and durability.
How to use:
- The crushed Kava Kava root is placed in the bag.
- The bag is immersed in water with oil or milk (usually cold or warm, but not boiling).
- The liquid is “pushed” through the bag by massaging it with the hands to extract the active ingredients (kavalactones).
- The drink is then ready to drink.
