Банистериопсис каапи, лоза духов

Banisteriopsis kaapi, or the Spirit Vine (Latin Banisteriopsis caapi) is a vine from the genus Banisteriopsis of the Malpighiaceae family. It grows in the jungles of South America.

Indian tribes have since ancient times prepared a hallucinogenic decoction from this plant — Ayahuasca (where parts of Psychotria viridis containing DMT were also added).

Banisteriopsis kaapi contains beta-carbolines (harmine, harmaline and tetrahydrogarmine), which are reversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors. The stems of the plant contain 0.11-0.83% beta-carbolines, 40-96% of the total amount is harmine.

In the Indian tribes of the Western Amazon, men drink the drink during religious holidays to cause color hallucinations and a feeling of euphoria. Some tribes also use the drink to identify the sources of witchcraft and the curse that caused the disease. In addition, the spirit vine is used as a medicinal plant for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and to expel parasites.
