Banisteriopsis caapi contains beta-carbolines (harmine, harmaline and tetrahydrogarmin), which are reversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors. The stems of the plant contain 0,11-0,83 % beta-carbolines, 40-96 % of the total amount being harmine.
